Borumba Dam 16 - 19 October 2008
I arrived at Borumba on Thursday Morning to find Duran had beat me there and to also find that Tom had made a great camp in the shade with his new camper. I could also recognize Hairymicks camp there too.
Duran had to go back into town to get mobile reception, so I started to set up. I was soon set up with Duran returning from town to help me with the finishing touches on my camp setup.
Soon Toni rolled in and setup. Tom and Mick came back to the camp after a fish on the dam with Mick reporting he had caught some rat bass. Mick could only make it for a day so he went home. So then there was just myself, Estuary Girl, Tomtre and Duran left on Thursday afternoon.
We sat around and had a few drinks until we saw a rig come down through the dark to our camp site, we soon realized it was Gra with his new camper in tow and two yaks on top, it was quite a load. Moments later PDO came in and we all helped the two of them set up in the dark. Anyway we all were setup and soon we were into feeding ourselves, drinking and chatting around the camp fire. So for the first night there was myself, Gra, PDO, Estuary Girl,Tomtre and Duran. The night brought showers and we ended up spending some time under Gra's camper before we all retired to bed.
On the way to the dam I had stopped at a fishing shop in Imbil and gained some local knowledge, so on Friday Morning, Gra, PDO, Duran and I decide to check it out. It was on Yabba creek below the dam wall and downstream from where we were camping. We launched from Stirling crossing which is between crossing 3 and 4 from Imbil. A truly beautiful spot, but unfortunately no fish, but Duran and Gra did manage to view half a dozen platypus going about their morning business.
Friday Afternoon it was up to the Dam for a look around, amazing how the dam had filled since last year. Steven M, Funpaddle, Gigantor and Noddy had arrived while we were out paddling. Later in the night Complete Novice arrived to take part in the early morning Saturday fish on the dam.
After we all woke up around 4.30 am, we made it to the dam for the paddle/pedal up to the treed area of the dam. Gra, PDO, Complete Novice, Steven M and I went early with the others joining as they saw fit. Blue Roo arrived at the camp during the morning and joined us as did Shappy. When we arrived at the Trees we all made our decisions which way to go, Most went to the south and took the Yabba creek branch and I think PDO made the decision to head north and do the Kinchant creek branch by himself. PDO happened to hook a Saratoga up along this branch, apparently throwing the hook after the 4 th jump form the water, bad luck Paul.
After the fish on Saturday afternoon we had a get together and some games. The inaugural Casting Challenge and Pool Noodle throwing comp. Great to see to new members won the casting competition and both Stu and Adrian had never used a bait caster before. Guess what they're buying this week.
Next came the Noodle throwing comp.It was a fun event we all had different styles, some worked, some didn't In the middle of the comp, The winners of the noodle comp were 1st Gra, 2nd PDO, 3rd Fun Paddle.
Estuary Girl and Tomtre arrived back with some firewood We received three piles of would that day, one lot form Toni and Tom, Duran went back out in his ute and got more that Tom and Toni had stock piled on the side of the road and then Complete Novice bought back some serious timber after his fish with Camj earlier in the afternoon.Serious Timber means Serious Fire. We burnt 2 trailer loads of fire wood in one night.
As usual for Friday and Saturday nights Estuary Girl whipped up her legendary cobber loaves. Some got up Sunday morning and went for a fish again, Blueroo and Shappy and later Estuary Girl and Fun Paddle but no fish were caught.
The rest of us packed up slowly and broke camp as we were ready.
On my personal fishing front I again did not land a bass but I did have one strike up the top of the Yabba Creek arm on a Mask Frog, it was definitely a toga.
I'd like to thank every one for coming, it certainly is an effort to get away, I hope you all enjoyed yourselves.
Over the Days that we were there we had 15 attendees whether for a day or three.
Thanks to our Sponsors also, we have some great prizes to hand out at the meeting, namely Charltons fishing, Mossops fishing and Sunstate Hobie.
